Our Student Council represents the views of all our pupils. It gives children the opportunity to make their voices heard and feel part of the whole school community. The aim of the school council is to help each other and to improve life in and around the school.

A visit from Conservative MP Vicky Ford

OLI’s school council met with Vicky Ford (Conservative MP for Chelmsford) to ask for her support in applying for funding for a new school porch! They were brilliant ambassadors for the school, and future MPs in the making!

A visit to the Houses of Parliament

The School Council had an opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament.  Whilst there, they had an opportunity to meet with Vicky Ford’s assistant and ask some very important questions.  Click on the link to read her response.

Parliament Week

Throughout this week, the Year 6 Student Council have been busy lobbying students to vote in a Bill requesting a small change to the girls’ winter school uniform.  On Tuesday, the School Council led a   powerful assembly to Years 2-6, where they put forward their argument. Children from these year groups were then invited to vote the Bill through. In true Parliamentary fashion, the Bill was passed by the ’House of Commons’ (pupils in Year2-6) and has now been passed onto the ‘House of Lords’ (the Governing Board) who will decide whether to push the Bill through.

As part of their Parliamentary work this week, Years 2-6 also took part in an online Parliamentary workshop. During the workshop, they were very excited to meet Vicky Ford, our local MP, who took some time out of her busy schedule to join them for a live question and answer session.

As usual, I was extremely proud of the way the children conducted themselves. We are very lucky to have such articulate, well-rounded pupils, who not only know their rights but also, perhaps more importantly, know how to use democracy as a framework to get their voices heard amongst the wider school community.  This bodes well for the future!

Well done to Muna, Jessica, Isabella S and Isabella O – perhaps you should all consider a career in politics!
